A DYNAMIC DIRECTING DUO Possession boasts not only two actors portraying the same character, but two directors at the helm as well. Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist met in junior high school in their native Stockholm, Sweden, and began making films together as students. Their short film, Victor, was nominated for an Academy Award®. Everyone involved in the making of Possession agrees that oddly enough there is no definitive division of labor between Bergvall and Sandquist – it's a total team effort. In fact, the directors work very closely together in the development phase and find themselves in almost constant agreement. "We’re usually on the same page," says Sandquist. Bergvall agrees: "We know each other so well that after we’ve gone through all the preparations and rigmarole of figuring out where we want to take a movie, by the time we're on the set, we both know exactly how we want everything to go. There’s such a shorthand between us that it’s really as if we’re one person." Geller admits that initially working with two directors can be challenging, but not so with Bergvall and Sandquist. "It was effortless with Joel and Simon – they were always able to keep an eye on everything and capture every moment," remembers Geller. "They have a wonderful way of communicating their ideas and thoughts to the actors. If one can’t quite finish a thought, the other one’s right there to communicate it. They really do finish each others sentences." Gellar describes the directors as open and incredibly creative. "With two of them at the helm, it could have been tough when the actors had suggestions, but they managed to always listen to our ideas," says Gellar. "And that wasn't easy because Possession is a clockwork riddle and each piece had to fit to make the puzzle work. Joel and Simon were wonderful. They very gracefully listened to us and tried to incorporate our ideas." Pace says that working with the two directors was great because they each brought different things to the table, but it was never conflicting. "It’s like they both had the exact same idea in mind, but they had different comments and different ways of thinking about the story," recalls Pace. "We were never left hanging with anything because, if Joel was dealing with the lights, then Simon came over to give a note. It wasn’t vastly different than working with a single director, except that there were two of them." Landes remembers that neither director contradicted the other. "Somebody would ask one of them a question and then ask the other, and they literally had the same answer," laughs Landes. "Sometimes one would give me a note, and then the other would elaborate on it, which was great because then I just got more detail." Tuva Novotny, who makes her North American debut as Casey, had previously worked with Bergvall and Sandquist on their Swedish feature, The Invisible. She says that working with the directing duo is always a wonderful experience. "Simon and Joel have a magnificent voice," recalls Novotny. "They just have this eye for how to get things exactly right. While one concentrates on the technical part, the other while work closely with the actors, and then they change. They can go from scene to scene and since they’re so together and in harmony with each other, they’re never on top of each other. It’s really a joy to work with them."
