Paper – it’s fragile yet strong; easily torn apart, yet interlaced with tightly woven fibers. Maybe that’s why it’s the gift a husband and a wife give one another on their first wedding anniversary.
It’s a symbol of their strong yet delicate bond, a union that in an instant can be ripped apart for all eternity.
That’s what happened to Jess and Ryan (Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michael Landes) in the movie, Possession, a couple that couldn’t have been more in love on the night of their first wedding
anniversary when, amidst
candlelight and flowers, Ryan gave Jess a glass locket with his gift inside.
It was a tiny piece of parchment on which he’d expressed his undying devotion. Yet in an instant, not even 24 hours
later, Ryan would get into a horrific car crash and fall deep into a coma, separating him from his beloved Jess for the very same length of time he’d promised to be with her . . . forever.
With little hope of recovery, Ryan now wastes away in his hospital bed in the same room with the other victim of that terrible accident, his younger brother Roman (Lee Pace), who has also not
regained consciousness. Troubled all his life, Roman looks uncharacteristically at peace for a man who has always been so troubled. In fact, it was Roman’s uncontrollable rage that caused him
to race out in the middle of the night, and it was Ryan’s goodness that sent him barreling down the highway to save him. Now, at least for a moment, Roman’s anger over not having the life that
Ryan has had, is at rest. Now, at least while deep in a coma, Roman is no longer conscious of what he can never possess . . . Jess’s undying love.
But as suddenly as his car collided with Ryan’s truck, Roman emerges from unconsciousness a new man. No longer restless and angry about what life has not given him, he is calm and joyful of all
that he has. He is happy and grateful to be alive, and his eyes express the goodness that his brother Ryan had once embodied. What happened the night of the accident? When the paramedics arrived
upon the accident scene, the two brothers were lying in the road with their blood commingling. Was it possible that their souls had done the same thing?

Jess can’t believe it, and yet as her husband’s body remains connected to tubes, his brother seems to have abandoned his own personality and adopted Ryan’s. Now it is Roman who thoughtfully tends
